Santenay 1er Cru - Gravières

Welcome to our lovely Burgundy!

Santenay lies at the southern tip of the famous route des Grands Crus, just a few minutes' drive from Beaune. It is right where the Côte de Beaune turns westward, exposing most of its vineyards to the south or south-east. The "climats", or vineyards, of Santenay were added to UNESCO's world heritage sites in 2015. The appellation covers 330 hectares and, reaching up the Trois Croix mountain, has the highest «communal » vineyard (450m) in Burgundy. The Santenay terroir is exceptionally rich and varied, the best of what the Burgundy region has to offer. Certain plots even have outcrops of the bedrock of the renowned Côte de Nuits. The soil consists mainly of sand several million years old, Oolitic limestone and rock dating back to the mid-Jurassic epoch, all is which is highly reminiscent of the wine-producing areas of Gevrey-Chambertin, Nuits-Saint-Georges or even Beaune.

The 1er Cru - Gravières is considered one of the best terroirs within the appellation. The vines are planted at mid-slope on south to south-east facing slopes. The word "gravières" comes from the gravelly nature of the earth, which is rife with angular gravel that becomes denser deeper down. The texture of the soil is clayey to clayey-sandy, dark brown-yellow on the surface, and light yellowy-brown in the subsoil.

Of the 24 hectares of this particular "climat", Château de la Crée has 2.3 hectares planted with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

• The Pinot Noir
(1 hectare) has been planted low down, where the slope is gentler and the soil deeper and more clayey. These wines are complex with subtle flavours, rich in red and black fruit coating supple silky tannins, and a long lasting spicy and mineral finish.

• The Chardonnay
(1.3 hectares) is planted high up, on the steepest part on the slopes, where the earth is shallower and stonier. Here it produces the great whites, loaded with energy and minerality, where tension and body are balanced with depth and intensity.

It is also the expertise and hard work of our technical teams, from the vine to the cellar, that ensure, for each vintage and in both colours, the quintessence of the Gravieres vineyards.

Ploughing until vine flowering, natural grass cover, controlled low yields, environmentally friendly practices respectful of our terroir, all work together to produce top-quality grapes, a faithful expression of this land.

A healthy harvest, low intervention winemaking, under the constant vigilance of our oenologist, gentle extraction, and barrel maturation that is specific to each appellation and each vintage, together bring a sense of place into your glass.

We are pleased to offer you a sensory exploration of this exceptional terroir
